Naidu looks to consolidate Kapu and Brahmin vote bank

Speaking at the Mahanadu, Chandrababu Naidu said that he would constitute a commission in the next six months with the objective of according BC status to the Kapus of Andhra Pradesh.

“This issue has been on our Party’s agenda for a long time and we need to deliver on it now,” said Naidu.

Interestingly, Naidu also for some reason made an effort to reach out to the Brahmin community by saying that his Party was considering political reservations for Brahmins.

“We are planning to accommodate communities which are not politically represented by accommodating them through indirect polls such as MLC’s and other posts,” he said.

Naidu had also promised a memorial for PV Narasimha Rao, the architect of India’s economic freedom, in Delhi. These statements show that Naidu is taking nothing for granted.

While the Kapus voted for TDP and swung the tide in the latter’s favor in the recent elections, the Brahmins who have always been Congressmen, by and large voted for YS Jagan this time around.

Under YSR, Brahmins got due prominence with leaders like Vundavalli Arun Kumar, Dronamraju Srinivas and Malladi Vishnu. But Jagan could not take them along.

Naidu now seems keen on preventing the support of this community for YSRCP and is taking steps in this direction. Also, by giving BC status to the Kapus, he can blunt to a great extent, any effectiveness of Pawan Kalyan should the latter contest in the 2019 elections.
