The decision taken by the Telangana government to enhance reservations for Muslims in education and employment has naturally gone down well with the Bharatiya Janata Party.
And it has got an excellent opportunity to whip up passions among the Hindus by opposing the Muslim reservations.
None other than senior BJP leader and Union information minister M Venkaiah Naidu has gone hammer and tongs at the TRS government for contemplating increasing reservations to Muslims in the name of Backward Classes.
“What are you trying to do by providing 12 per cent quota to Muslims? Are you trying to create another Pakistan in Telangana?” he asked.
Venkaiah said providing reservations to Muslims under whatever pretext would only amount to pampering them. “It is nothing but providing reservations on the basis of religion. And it is against the constitutional spirit,” he commented.
While supporting the enhancement of quota for BCs and STs, Venkaiah said religious-based reservations would lead to social conflicts and would ultimately divide the society on communal lines.
