Why Modi Prefers A Stalled Parliament?

Parliament has been paralyzed over the Congress-Left demand that foreign minister Sushma Swaraj and the CM’s of Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, Vasundhara Raje and Shivraj Singh Chauhan, resign over their roles in the Lalit Modi and Vyapam controversies.

There is no business being transacted in the House and tax-payer’s money is just going down the drain. There is a theory doing the rounds that Narendra Modi might actually be happy with the current scenario in Parliament.

Apart from the ‘Goods and Services’ Bill, there are no other major bills tabled for this session of Parliament. And Modi feels that as long as the Opposition keeps baying for the blood of Sushma, Vasundhara and Chauhan, it will further strengthen his own place in the BJP.

In-fighting was a never a culture of the BJP. In the past, Atal Bihari Vajpayee and LK Advani were both contenders for the Prime Minister’s chair. Nevertheless, the competition was not marked by dirty politics or in-fighting. In fact even today, LK Advani is one of the few regular visitors to Vajpayee (the latter is not keeping good health at all).

Modi’s rise changed that all. He and Amit Shah successfully managed to overthrow the old guard of LK Advani, Murali Manohar Joshi, Arun Shourie and others and brought in a culture of groupism in the BJP. It was there earlier but never so blatant.
