Why BJP Is Forced To Compromise In Kashmir

The BJP has put up an impressive showing in the Jammu and Kashmir assembly elections winning 25 seats out of 87.

The PDP Party won 28 seats and for months, talks between BJP and PDP for forming a coalition government in J&K have reached a stalemate owing to intransigence on key issues by both Parties.

While the BJP wants to continue with the Armed Forces Special Protection Act (AFSPA) in accordance with the wishes of the Army, the PDP wants it to be revoked in peaceful areas.

The other issue is over citizenship to Hindu refugees from West Pakistan. While the BJP wants citizenship to all refugees who have settled in J&K after partition, the PDP is opposed to it.

The PDP has made it clear that it will not form an alliance with the BJP unless these two conditions were sorted out in its favor. The BJP is in a tight spot but may still compromise and go ahead to form the government because of its Delhi experience.

The last time in Delhi, BJP could have also formed the government but let go by the opportunity in the hope of getting a complete majority.

Kejriwal stormed back to power winning 67 out of 70 seats. BJP doesn’t want that debacle repeated in Kashmir.
