Who Will Pay For These Freebies?

Immediately, after being sworn in as the Chief Minister, Tamil Nadu CM Jayalalitha signed five orders that were at the core of the AIADMK manifesto.

The orders related to loan waiver for farmers, free 100 units of power to all domestic consumers, shutting down 500 liquor shops and reducing working hours of shops, 8 grams of gold to poor women getting married, and 200 units of free power to handlooms and 750 units for power looms every two months.

The farm waiver alone will cost some Rs 6000 crore and will benefit nearly 17 lakh farmers. The free power scheme is going to cost another Rs 2000 crore. Who is going to pay for these waivers and freebies? The people!

Jayalalitha is not going to pay out of her pocket. And considering that the rich don’t pay taxes along with the poor, it is only the middle-class and lower-middle class people who will have to bear the burden for this shameless populism. In other words, they are going to bear the brunt in the form of additional taxation.

A recent survey revealed that only 2% in India pay taxes and the cream of this comes from the middle –class and lower middle-class.

People like Jayalalitha, KCR and Chandrababu Naidu are the reason why India will continue to remain a developing country. And the reward for those who pay their taxes on time? More taxation! A great incentive indeed!
