What Happened To Anna Canteens?

A month back, the Andhra Pradesh made a huge show about reviving the Anna canteens all over the state. But 30 days later, no minister seems to be aware of what's happening.

It was announced that the AP government would revive 35 Anna canteens in all the 13 districts of Andhra Pradesh.

It was said that a plate of idli would be provided for Rs 1 and a plate of meals would be given for Rs 5 in these canteens which were meant for those living below the poverty line.

In fact, ministers Paritala Sunitha, Narayana and others also went to Tamil Nadu to understand the working of Amma canteens there.

A proposal was made to start these canteens in Vizag and Anantapur initially. But the idea was put on hold due to cyclone Hud Hud.

However, there is still no action being taken till date. One of the main reasons for this is the government’s shrewd move to push the onus on to the municipalities.

The overall cost for the scheme is estimated at Rs 160 crores. Though the government wanted to push the scheme on to the municipalities, they refused to take responsibility due to lack of funds. Now, the government is said to be in a fix.

For now, a corporation is running a canteen in Hyderabad. But since Hyderabad has ample funds, it is feasible there. However, the AP government promised to run the scheme in Andhra Pradesh and wonder what they will do next.
