'We Thought Lagadapati Would Attempt Suicide'

Did former Congress MP Lagadapati plan to attempt suicide on February 18, 2014, when the Andhra Pradesh bifurcation bill was passed in Lok Sabha?

The answer is yes, if one were to go by another former MP Ponnam Prabhakar. In an interview to a television channel, Ponnam said Lagadapati had told him a day before that he would stall the bifurcation bill at any cost, even if it required giving up his life.

“We were all very curious to know what his strategy would be. We even thought he might attempt suicide in the well of the House to stop the bill. The next day, when the bill was introduced and discussion was to take place, Lagadapati suddenly got up and used pepper spray in the House,” he recalled.

Ponnam said everybody was chocking with the pepper spray and since he was closer to Lagadapati, he was the most affected person.

“My eyes were burning and I cried loudly. I thought I would lose my eyesight, till I got admitted to hospital,” he said.

In any case, Lagadapati did not attempt suicide, but the bifurcation turned out to suicidal for the Congress party!
