SC Shocker To KCR On Defecting MLAs!

Supreme Court on Wednesday dealt a shock to Telangana Rashtra Samithi president and chief minister K Chandrasekhar Rao, who had admitted several MLAs from the Opposition parties into his party without seeking their resignations from their posts.

SC admitted a petition filed by Congress MLA Sampath Kumar who challenged defection of over 20 MLAs into the TRS without resigning.

It served notices on the MLAs and also Speaker in this regard. The court sought to know why the MLAs should not be disqualified under Anti-Defection Law.

Sampath Kumar had filed petitions in the High Court twice in the past, but the latter refused to intervene saying it was the prerogative of the Speaker. So, he moved the Supreme Court, which has admitted his petition and issued notices to the MLAs and the Speaker.

The TRS had won only 63 MLAs in the 2014 elections and subsequently, its strength had gone up to 90 with the defection of 12 TDP, eight Congress, three YSRC, one CPI and three independents.
