Row Over Jagan's Plan To Rename Krishna District

Row Over Jagan's Plan To Rename Krishna District

YSR Congress party president and Opposition leader Y S Jaganmohan Reddy’s announcement that he would rename Krishna district as Nandamuri Taraka Rama Rao district after coming to power has kicked up a row.

Jagan has certainly pulled the rug from under the feet of the TDP by making the announcement at Nimmakuru the village adopted by Chandrababu Naidu’s son Nara Lokesh.

But within hours, resistance to Jagan’s announcement came from within the YSRC. Senior party leader Dutta Ramachandra Rao on Tuesday said he would resign from the party if Jagan was serious about renaming the district after NTR.

“The district and its people are indebted to the river Krishna. The recognition, the prosperity and the culture of the people of the district is bestowed by the great river Krishna,” he said and announced that he would soon launch “Krishna Porata Samithi” and fight against Jagan’s decision till he withdraws the proposal.

The TDP leaders, though on the defensive on the day one, sought to turn the tables on Jagan.

“It was just a publicity stunt playing to the gallery in Nimmakuru. He was only trying to divert the attention of the people from the “Dharma Poratam” undertaken by chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu in Tirupati,” Minister Kollu Ravindra said.

The minister said the proposal to rename Krishna would be examined by the government.

“But the most important thing is to get Bharat Ratna for NTR. We are demanding that the centre honour NTR with Bharata Ratna,” Ravindra said.
