Nani Then, Errabelli Now

It is common nowadays for three members of the same family to represent three different political parties. That way, the interests of the family will always be protected irrespective of the family in power.

Similarly, from the political parties’ point of view, it is important to have their loyalist in the other camp, a person who can mediate their interests if necessary or inflict maximum damage.

We have seen Errabelli Dayakar Rao emerge as a TRS covert in the TDP. But Naidu himself used a similar strategy in the past against Chiranjeevi.

When the latter started ‘Praja Rajyam’, the general perception was that it was started with the blessings of the late YSR mainly to split the TDP votes and help the Congress come to power a second time.

The initial enthusiasm generated by the party was immense with people from all walks of life flocking to Chiranjeevi’s camp. Among one of the early entrants was Kesineni Nani. People were surprised for it very rare for a Kamma to be supporting a party outside of his community.

Sometime later, Kesineni Nani held a ‘press meet’ and announced his resignation from the Praja Rajyam saying that it was a hot bed of corruption where party tickets were being auctioned to the highest bidder. This ‘press meet’ caused immense damage to the reputation of Praja Rajyam and the party subsequently fared far below expectations in the polls.

Of course, Nani is now an MP representing the TDP from Vijayawada. History always tends to repeat itself.
