Naidu To Defer Vizag Civic Polls Fearing Backlash?

Naidu To Defer Vizag Civic Polls Fearing Backlash?

If the reports coming from the Telugu Desam Party sources are to be believed, Telugu Desam Party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu is contemplating postponement of the Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation elections indefinitely.

The Naidu government is planning to defer the polls on the pretext of merger of several villages with the corporation. But the matter is in the court now; so, there is no possibility of conducting the elections till the court gives its clearance.

At the same time, the delimitation of the wards and preparation of new electoral rolls are yet to be undertaken. Sources say the GVMC elections cannot be held before 2019 general elections.

Apparently, Naidu fears there might be negative results for the TDP in the GVMC polls and that would have an impact on the party’s prospects in the next assembly elections.

It was evident from the statement of Naidu during the recent meeting of party workers in Visakhapatnam that it would be better if the GVMC elections were held along with the assembly and Lok Sabha elections. If the elections are held now, all the developmental works come to a halt in the name of election code, he said.

However, the YSRC is strongly objecting to the plan to defer elections. Gudivada Amarnath, corporator in the last council and YSRC district president, flayed the government for the delay.

“For the last five years, citizens are suffering without an elected municipal council to address their problems. The government is searching for excuses to postpone the GVMC elections,” Amarnath said.
