Naidu fast: Official or party programme?

Naidu fast: Official or party programme?

Telugu Desam Party president and Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu held a one-day hunger strike in Vijayawada on Friday demanding special category status to the state and implementation of assurances given in the AP Reorganisation Act, 2014.

Well, it is rather rare that the chief minister of a state sitting on fast against the injustice done by the Centre. There were hardly any such instances in Indian political history. That way, he attracted the attention of the entire nation.

So far so good. But one doubt still remains even after a day of the completion of his fast: whether Naidu had taken up the fast in the capacity of the chief minister or the president of the TDP?

At the beginning of his speech after breaking the fast, Naidu himself said he had not sit on fasting not as TDP president but as a chief minister of the state. So, all the opposition parties, organisations and all sections of people should have supported him.

But as he went on speaking, Naidu clearly transformed himself into a TDP leader. He claimed that it was only the TDP which had put up a strong fight against the Centre.

He also took the name of YSR Congress party alleging that the latter had conspired with the BJP at the Centre to defame him, his party and his government.

He even used the platform to attack the BJP, saying it was trying to weaken the TDP by indulging in collusive politics.

“Right now, the BJP is busy with Karnataka elections. After that, there is a possibility of the party focussing on Andhra Pradesh to create troubles for the state by stopping funds and stalling the development in the state,” Naidu said.

He reminded how the BJP tried to adopt backdoor methods to control politics in Tamil Nadu and weakened the state government.

“They can’t do that in Andhra Pradesh. If they make any such attempt, the people will not spare them,” he warned.

He also asked the people not to give even a single seat to the BJP and teach a lesson to the YSR Congress party.

“All in all, he used the government platform to seek political gains for the TDP,” a journalist observed.
