Hyderabad: Every Tom, Dick and Harry from across the nation is descending on the campus of UoH and trying to make their presence felt.
Hundreds of students passed away in the past, hundreds have committed suicide. But what felt like a sad event confined to the auspices of the university, has snowballed into a national issue and solely because of the media.
The media could have reported the suicide of Rohit Vemula as ‘suicide of a research scholar’. Instead, all the leading publications added the prefix ‘Dalit’ and intentionally too. It had the desired effect.
It suddenly became vote-bank politics, slanging matches between parties and ample content and TRP for the media as they lap it up.
The media is responsible, if not for the suicide of the student, then at least for making a mockery of it.
