YSR Congress party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy seems to have realised at last how powerful the media can be, if it plays the role of the Opposition.
When Jagan launched Sakshi daily and channel when his father Y S Rajasekhar Reddy was the Chief Minister, the focus was mostly on boasting the latter’s achievements and running down the Telugu Desam Party. They were considered more or less an official paper and channel of YSR government.
Jagan did not change the style even after he came out of the Congress and floated his own party – the focus was only on highlighting his Odarpu Yatras, rallies and the public meetings of his and his family members.
The Sakshi media was then viewed only as a family enterprise. Such was the arrogance of Jagan that he never used to interact with media persons of other channels, except those from national media, that too, occasionally.
Now that YSR Congress party is in the Opposition, Jagan has acknowledged the importance of media.
He has apparently realised that anti-establishment reports and expose of people’s issues would always go down well with the readers and they have high readership and viewership value.
The massive 25,000 acre-land scam exposed on Wednesday was definitely a big score for Sakshi and the channel’s ratings must have definitely gone up.
Especially since, the expose targeted Naidu and his son Lokesh, it generated a lot of heat in the public. Definitely, it would help Jagan get a lot of political mileage.
