The NDA government at the Centre led by Narendra Modi has expressed a lot of sympathy and concern for the people of Tamil Nadu, which was battered by heavy rains.
It even offered to provide huge financial assistance to the Tamil Nadu government. Obviously, it wants to befriend Jayalalithaa to get the political benefits in the next Assembly elections.
However, the Centre has not shown similar concern towards Andhra Pradesh, which also faced huge loss in Nellore, Kadapa and Chittoor due to heavy rains and floods.
On Thursday, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu wrote a letter to Centre asking for immediate flood relief of Rs 1,000 crore to combat the flood situation and rescue the flood-affected people in the State.
In his letter to the Prime Minister, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh and Agriculture Minister Radha Mohan, Naidu said the State had incurred a heavy loss and it was estimated Rs 3000 crore. He sought immediate assistance from the Centre to the tune of Rs 1000 crore to take up rehabilitation in the flood-affected areas and reconstruction works. He will send a detailed flood loss report soon, the letter said.
However, going by the past experience, the State would get a pittance from the Centre. First, it would send an experts team to assess the damage, after the floods recede. They report to the Centre a month later and then, the Centre would release a couple of hundreds of crores as per the eligibility of the State. And the State would suffer a lot by then!
