Drama Over Special Status To AP Still On!

Though the Narendra Modi government has made it clear on the floor of Lok Sabha that there is no question of granting special status to Andhra Pradesh, certain leaders have been desperately trying to save the skin of Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu who is now in the eye of storm for hoodwinking the people.

First, it was M Venkaiah Naidu, a close pal of Chandrababu, who said the Centre had not yet taken a decision on special status to AP and there was still a chance to get it.

He blamed it on the media and the Opposition parties for jumping the gun and attacking the Centre and the State governments.

He even got a story planted in Andhra Jyothy saying that the Home Ministry was still considering the special status for AP.

On Sunday, it was the turn of Union Minister of State for Commerce & Industry Nirmala Seetharaman to allay fears on special status issue. Everybody knows Nirmala is wife of Parakala Prabhakar, the media advisor for Chandrababu Naidu.

She said special status is the right of Andhra Pradesh State and the Centre was committed to confer special status on AP. However, it will take some more time to accord the status, she said, adding that the Centre has allocated Rs 500 crore for the construction of new capital city for AP.

She assured that she would also mount pressure on the Centre to accord special status to the State.
