Can Scam-Tainted Chandy Revive Telangana Cong?

If reports coming from New Delhi are to be believed, former Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy is going to be appointed as in-charge of the Congress party in Telangana, replacing veteran AICC general secretary Digvijay Singh.

Chandy, who was the Chief Minister of Kerala between 2004 and 2006 and also from 2011 to 2016, lost the recent elections very badly. Interestingly, Chandy faced serious allegations of corruption in solar scam and also alleged sex link with actress Saritha Nair.

The decision to appoint Chandy as the party in-charge of Telangana is surprising as he has absolutely no understanding of the Telangana affairs.

He never held such a post in the past, while his colleagues like Vayalar Ravi had dealt with the issue. But the party high command is worried over the poor performance of the party in Telangana since formation of the new state.

Sonia Gandhi is deeply upset over the ever deteriorating strength of Congress party in Telangana despite UPA granting statehood.

Under these circumstances, it is doubtful whether a new person like Chandy can make any difference to the party. Instead, the high command could have chosen a younger person like Jyothiraditya Scindia to deal with the Congress in Telangana, say sources.
