The election for the post of AP BJP President was supposed to be held in March but the Party kept the issue in abeyance.
It is a significant election for the saffron Party which is keen on making inroads into South India. Therefore, the choice of BJP President for AP becomes extremely significant.
The current President K Hari Babu won the 2014 election over YS Vijayamma. More than Hari Babu winning the election, it can be said as a classic case of the people of Vizag defeating Vijayamma for they were scared into believing by the TDP that Vijayammas victory would usher in Rayalaseema factionism into Vizag. That the people of Vizag are rueing their decision now is an entirely different thing.
But suffice to say that Hari Babu has done precious little for the people of Vizag since getting elected. Sources say that Hari Babu is keen on not contesting for another term as BJP President in order to concentrate on his constituency works.
That means, there is going to be a good contest between the likes of Purandeswari and Kanna Lakshmi Narayana. Venkayya Naidu might back Purandeswari for casteist reasons. Hari Babu is also of the same caste. But under these people, the BJP in AP will always be a second wing of the TDP! Therefore, the election assumes a lot of significance.
