Are We Getting Our Priorities Right?

Recently there has been a lot of initiative shown by the government in setting up airports across various towns of Andhra Pradesh.

A team of experts from ‘Airports Authority of India’ has also visited the proposed sites for a feasibility study.

As of now, Tirupati, Vizag, and Gannavaram are the primary airports of AP.

New ones are proposed at Nellore, Donakonda etc. to its credit, the government is not considering anything lavish like in the case of the new capital. It is only keen on no-frills airports.

The government also says that industries which have evinced interest in setting up shop in these areas have asked for an airport.

Which brings us to the question: Do airports come up where there is development or does development occur where there are airports? By and large, air travel in Andhra Pradesh is in its nascent stage and still considered a luxury by the middle class.

The need of the hour ought to be prioritizing those kinds of policies which would result in maximum benefit to the majority.

Even the ‘Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry’ has said that if Andhra Pradesh is looking for fast development then it’s emphasis should be on ‘small and medium enterprises’ (SME) and infrastructure development.

Given this advice by such an august body, perhaps the government needs to sit back and reconsider its priorities.
