Another Player Of Vote-Bank Politics

Kaliachauk in West Bengal witnessed communal violence on January 3 when Muslim mobs allegedly attacked Hindu shops and households apart from targeting policemen on duty.

West Bengal is due for elections and naturally, political parties are interested in each and every incident that occurs there.

Against this backdrop, a delegation comprising BJP MPs S S Ahluwalia, Bishnudayal Ram and Bhupinder Yadav was detained at Malda station early on Monday morning and sent back two hours later.

A little later, CPM MP Mohammed Salim and party district secretary Ambar Mitra were detained for about two hours at Amriti, 15 km from Kaliachak.

Police blocked their path and asked Salim not to proceed as it could disrupt peace. The repeated pleas of the MP that he was on a fact-finding mission and was entitled to know the truth as a Member of Parliament, fell on deaf years.

Mamata Banerjee has been frequently accused of indulging in minority-appeasing and vote-bank politics. If it leads to a security situation, she has only herself to blame.
