A Great Initiative Nipped In The Bud!

Recently, the Commissioner of Police, Vijayawada, Mr. AB Venkateswara Rao launched an initiative called 'Operation Night Domination' which imposed curbs on the movement of people at night.

From 11pm to 6 am in the morning, people on the roads had to carry some sort of identification cards with them along with papers of the vehicle or bike with them.

Once the identity of the person was established, he was free to go. However, a few persons have objected to this ‘operation’ calling it an infringement of fundamental rights and the ‘High Court’ has given a stay on it in response to a petition filed by an advocate.

Even Kesineni Nani, Vijayawada MP criticized the CP at a public function.

“By imposing curbs on the movement of people at night, the CP has brought a bad name to the city. It appears he did this only to enhance his own image rather than doing it with an intention of keeping Vijayawada safe. After this night domination, Vijayawada has acquired the sobriquet of a crime capital. Who did the CP consult before implementing this programme? Does Vijayawada have such a law and order problem that restrictions like night domination had to be clamped? Such a thing is not there even in Delhi and Mumbai,” said Nani.

Counterview:

The crime rate in Delhi and Mumbai is one of the highest in the country and an operation like this would definitely help to bring it down.

How can keeping the city safe at night from rowdy sheeters, rapists and other anti-social elements bring a bad name to the city? And by the way, Mr. Nani what good name have you brought to the city?

Vijayawada is well connected by rail to all parts of the country and the migration of people from other states, in search of livelihood has increased tremendously in recent times, especially after the bifurcation of the State.

Along with them, gangsters from UP, Bihar and other States are also making the city, the hub for their activities. In one night when around 140 people were detained as part of the search operations, sixteen were held for not having proper identification on them while the others were allowed to go.

Investigation revealed that the sixteen people had criminal records and were on the prowl for another opportunity. Besides, a host of people were booked for drunk driving and other offences. Prevention they say is better than cure and that is exactly what the Commissioner is rightfully trying to do.

By the way, unless there is some emergency, what business do right-minded people have prowling on the streets after midnight? And anyway, there is no restriction on the movement of the people. All they have to carry with them is proper identification. That is all! This is a welcome initiative and in fact should be started in as many cities as possible.

The Police are frequently criticized for inaction and when they do take pro-active measures, this is the result!

Show some decorum, Nani!

Being an MP, how can Nani criticize the Commissioner at a public event? If he had a problem with the initiative of the CP, then he should have met the latter in person and sought clarification or expressed his disapproval. But not at a public forum.

Who did he think the Commissioner was? A highly educated government servant or an opposition party politician? As with any system of government, democracy has its pluses and minuses.

The minus is when a ‘bus operator’ who probably does not even know the annual GDP of India, becomes an MP and thereby the political boss of an educated, and brilliant person who by didn't of his effort has cleared the prestigious UPSC and chosen a highly responsible line of work. CP Venkateswara Rao’s good initiative may have been nipped in the bud, nevertheless he deserves commendation from at least the public, not censure!
