18-Month Jail For Mallya's Aide

In a rude shock to Kingfisher Airlines chairman Vijay Mallya, who has been on the run at present, a special court in Hyderabad on Thursday sentenced his close aide A Raghunathan to imprisonment for a period of one and a half years in connection with the cheque bounce case.

Apart from jail conviction, Raghunathan was also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000, which he paid immediately. Raghunathan, the accused No. 3 in the case, however filed a petition seeking suspension of the sentence for a period 30 days, stating that he had only acted according to the instructions given by Mallya.

The case pertains to bouncing of two cheques of Rs 50 lakh each by Kingfisher Airlines Ltd. to GMR Hyderabad International Airport Ltd.

(GHIAL), which operates Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, towards charges for using the facilities at the airport for Kingfisher Airlines flights. The case was filed under the Negotiable Instruments Act.

In all, 17 cases have been filed against Kingfisher Airlines in different courts over outstanding amount of Rs. 22.5 crore, which it owes to GMR.
