Amaravati house sites: SC upholds HC stay order

Amaravati house sites: SC upholds HC stay order

The Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy government’s plan to distribute house sites to weaker sections in Amaravati received a temporary setback in the Supreme Court on Monday.

A division bench of the Supreme Court led by chief justice Sharad Aravind Bobde upheld the orders of Andhra Pradesh high court stalling the distribution of house sites in Amaravati by making changes in the master plan to convert part of the capital city into a residential zone (R-5 Zone).

The chief justice bench felt that the high court had gone in the right direction in the hearing on Amaravati lands issue.

The bench, however, directed that the state high court complete the final hearing of the case at the earliest.

It may be recalled that the state high court had suspended the orders issued by the Jagan government making changes in the master plan of Amaravati so as to enable it distribute the house sites in the capital region. The suspension would be in force till the government completes the inquiry, it said.

The petitions in the high court were filed by Avala Nanda Kishore, a farmer of Venkatayapalem and some others opposing the land sites distribution.

The SC challenged the high court order in Supreme Court, which refused to intervene on Monday.
