The comment made by maverick film director Ram Gopal Varma comparing actress Charmee with Jhansi Lakshmi Bai created an uproar in the political circles, especially the BJP ranks, but Varma strongly defended his comments.
Varma equated Charmee with Jhansi Lakshmi Bai, as the former had challenged the might of the government in the court against interrogation of film stars by the excise department authorities in the ongoing drug racket case, just like Jhansi Rani challenged the might of the British. In a way, Varma compared the TRS government with the British government.
Reacting to the criticism against him, Varma wondered what wrong was there in comparing Charmee with Jhansi Lakshmi Bai.
“Nowhere in the history it was written that Jhansi Rani was a freedom fighter and that she had fought for the country. For that matter, there was no such feeling of nationalism and patriotism those days. She only fought to safeguard her kingdom. Similarly, Charmee also fought for the prestige of the film industry,” he said.
Stating that it was his personal opinion to make the comparison between Charmee and Jhansi Lakshmi Bai, the ace director said there was no rule that prohibited him from making such a comparison.
He demanded that the SIT authorities should make public the statements made by the 12 film personalities during the interrogation.
“Otherwise, they should stop leaking to the media that there are more big film stars in the drug case,” he said.
