As India woke up to the disturbing and sad news of the sudden demise of legendary Bollywood actress Sridevi, who breathed her last on February 24 in Dubai, tributes poured in on Twitter on Sunday, with people expressing their shock and heartbreak.
One such tweet was posted by the official handle of the Congress party but it soon landed them in trouble after they categorically mentioned that the cine superstar was awarded a Padma Shri in 2013 by the UPA government.
In the now-deleted tweet, the Congress party had written, "We regret to hear about the passing away of Sridevi . An actor par excellence. A legend who will continue to live in our hearts through her stellar body of work. Our deepest condolences to her loved ones. She was awarded the Padma Shri by the UPA Govt in 2013."
As soon as the tweet was up, several Twitteratis slammed the party for trying to "play politics" over the death of the iconic actress and hit out at the Congress for "insulting" Sridevi.
While a few users pointed out that the Padma Shri award is given by the government, and not a particular political party, to the citizen, others accused the Congress of indulging in 'cheap politics'.
Facing backlash over the tweet, the party deleted the post and uploaded a new tweet, sans the 'offending' line.
Earlier in the day, Congress president Rahul Gandhi had also tweeted his condolences over Sridevi's demise, calling her "India's favourite actress". He said, "Shocked to hear about the sudden and untimely death of one of India’s favourite actress, Sridevi. Sridevi was an incredibly talented and versatile actress whose vast body of work spanned a range of genres and languages. My condolences to her family. May her soul rest in peace."
