There is no doubt about the fact that Rajinikanth is one of the biggest superstars not just in India but around the world.
Just around one and a half month back his film 2.0 released and rocked the box office worldwide. And no less was expected from his recent release Petta. And exactly that has happened.
Though not at the level of 2.0, Petta is still heading towards Super Hit status as it has made a huge dent at the worldwide box office. And has also collected a fair amount of money at Tamil Nadu box office.
But, sadly for Rajinikanth, it is unable to brave the storm of Thala Ajith's Viswasam. Petta opened alongside Viswasam this January 10 and while it is leading the worldwide box office by a small margin, it's lagging behind the Ajith starrer at Tamil Nadu box office by a similar margin.
Nevertheless, both Petta and Viswasam are a big success and such is that gravity of their success that, according to trade analyst Sreedhar Pillai, "#Petta & #Viswasam push out Tamil films which were due for January 25 Release. Theatres are going to give it a “free run” till February 1. There will be an avalanche of films in February before exam season starts."
But, with Viswasam beating Petta at Tamil Nadu box office, Ajith has created history. He has become the only actor in the last 27 years to beat Rajinikanth at Tamil Nadu box office.
The last time a Rajinikanth movie opened at the second position at the box office was in 1992 when his Pandian clashed with Kamal Haasan's cult classic, Thevar Magan. At that time, the Kamal Haasan starrer had topped the box office beating the Rajinikanth starrer.
Trade analyst Ramesh Bala tweeted about this unique feat achieved by Ajith.
He wrote, "The last time a #SuperstarRajinikanth movie opened at No.2 on Day 1 at the TN Box Office was Oct 25th, 1992 when #ThevarMagan opened better than #Pandian It took nearly 27 years and #Thala #Ajith's #Viswasam opened better than #Petta at the TN Box office on Day 1(Jan 10th, 2019)"
