ONGC engineer drives off with Rs.6 lakh bike, arrested

Hyderabad: An assistant executive engineer in Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC) was arrested for stealing Harley Davidson bike from a showroom here four days ago, police said on Saturday.

Thorlapati Kiran, an IIT post graduate, was arrested from Maharashtra's Solapur and brought him to Hyderabad on Saturday.

The 28-year-old on September 1 had escaped with Rs.6 lakh bike from Harley Davidson showroom in Banjara Hills while test driving the vehicle.

According to police, the accused works at ONGC Mumbai and draws a salary of Rs.80,000.

Kiran studied in Military School, Trimulgherry, Secunderabd and did his engineering at Vasavi Engineering College, Hyderabad. He is a post graduate from IIT, Chennai.

"The accused was crazy about going on long drives on this costly bike. He tried to buy this vehicle in 2014, but his family prevented him to do so as it was not suitable for him," said Deputy Commissioner of Police A.Venkateshwar Rao.

The police officer said most of the youth were indulging in this type of crimes as they get attracted towards costly bikes, cell phones and costly life styles.

Showing a fake driving license in the name of Syed Taher, Kiran had taken 750 CC Harley Davidson bike on a test ride. His sweet talk, dressing and sophisticated manners made the showroom staff believed he is a serious buyer.

However, instead of going on regular test drive route, he took another route and escaped. The show room employee following him failed to catch him in the evening rush-hour traffic.

The accused sneaked out of Hyderabad city after filling tank at a petrol bunk at Panjagutta and escaped towards Mumbai.

The special teams formed by police tracked him after scanning through the CCTV footage and other technical evidences.
