Vijayamma Follows YSR Sentiment!

After a long time, the Chevella sentiment has come back to the fore in the state politics. YSR Congress party president Y S Vijayalakshmi on Saturday kicked off her “Rachabanda” programme in Telangana from Chevella town in Ranga Reddy district, as part of her efforts to consolidate the party in the Telangana region.

Her husband late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy had this “Chevella sentiment” when he was in power. He used to launch all his government and party programmes from Chevella, as he strongly believed that any programme launched from this place would fetch him a lot of success. It was from this place that he had kicked off his “historic” 1600-km long Padayatra in April 2003 that catapulted him to power in 2004 elections. His electioneering in 2004 and 2009 was also launched from this place. The launch of National Rural Employment Guarantee Programme by Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, “pavala vaddi” scheme and Rs 2 a kg rice scheme were also launched from this place.

So, Vijayamma, too, chose Chevella to start her Telangana tour hoping that it would give her party the much-needed strength in the region. And no programme from Chevella could be launched without praying Are Mysamma, a village deity at Rajendranagar. So, Vijayamma, though a devout Christian, offered prayers at this temple before starting her programme. However, she also prayed at Methodist Church at Moinabad to display her faith.

The only difference between YSR and Vijayamma was that YSR used to take “aarthi” from his “sister” Sabita Indra Reddy, before launching his programmes. But Vijayamma has no support of Sabita. So, one doubts whether the Chevella sentiment will work for her!
