PM does rare visit to Hyd, Sonia avoids

Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh, who has rarely visited Hyderabad in the last four years, was compelled to come to the city on Sunday in the wake of the devastating blasts at Dilsukhnagar three days ago.

Fearing attack from the opposition parties in parliament, Manmohan Singh came to Hyderabad to get the first hand information about the blasts and calling on the victims. Though his visit would not make any difference either to the people or to the victims, he had to pay a visit to the hospitals just to give some moral support to the victims, since he is answerable to the opposition in parliament on Monday.

Ironically, UPA chairperson and Congress president Sonia Gandhi chose to ignore visiting Hyderabad to call on the blast victims on security grounds. One wonders what additional security she would need than what was provided for the Prime Minister.  Perhaps, the intelligence authorities must be wondering she might get protests from pro-Telangana forces.

Surprising as it might sound, Sonia Gandhi has visited the state only twice in the last four years, though Andhra Pradesh is a Congress-ruled state which had sent the maximum number of 33 MPs to the UPA kitty.

The first time she had visited was on the occasion of the death of late Y S Rajasekhara Reddy and her second visit was on the occasion of the death of Satya Sai Baba of Puttaparthi two years ago. Since then, she has been avoiding visiting the state in the wake of escalating Telangana movement.
