Editorial: Kamal...Not Out But Going Down

Kamal Haasan has always believed in doing what he strongly perceives a breakthrough path in cinema and to a large extent he has been successful. But today, this great icon who gave a legendary status is being treated like a common man and as one of his staff members had put it “The icon broke down”. Kamal’s indication that having put his entire fortune in this movie and being on the verge of bankruptcy, some large dark forces are stopping his film ‘Vishwaroopam’.

Initially it was meant to be a routine legal hiccup which could have been clear but closer it is getting the complicated it is becoming. One thing is clear, it is not just about Muslim organizations alleging that their sentiments are hurt, it is about pushing Kamal to the edge of desperation and bringing him down to his knees. And to add to the pain, the cooperation from film fraternity is anguishing.

All in the Tamil industry are giving a lukewarm support and are being very politically correct with their statements which once again prove that relations and friendship in film industry is total fake. A man who always worked hard to raise the standards is being pulled down by those who don’t understand even a tip of art and cinema. Kamal is now heading to the Supreme Court but no one knows how this is going to shape.

On a business level, what is going to be the fate of ‘Vishwaroopam’ after all this chaos? As of now, the trade Gurus are predicting a loss of Rs 30 crore- Rs 50 crores but if things go positively and the film runs in 500 theatres, then two weeks of good response will put Kamal in safe zone. As of now, those who watched the film have hailed it in all angles.

Any further delay on its release will cause trouble because there is Mani Ratnam’s ‘Kadal’ and Bejoy Nambiar’s ‘David’.  If these two can postpone their films then there is a chance. Only time and fate will decide Kamal’s future but it has once again brought a lot of shame to our nation and its rulers who would not hesitate to break just about anyone for their own motives.
