Dharmana All Set To Go Behind Bars!

It looks like minister for roads and buildings Dharmana Prasada Rao is going to face the inevitable: going behind the bars in connection with the controversial VANPIC case, related to the alleged illegal assets case of YSR Congress party president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy.

The special court for the CBI on Monday approved the petition of the CBI to prosecute Dharmana and former minister Mopidevi Venkataramana in the VANPIC case under Prevention of Corruption Act. The court asked Dharmana to appear before it by January 31.

The court observed that there was no need for the CBI to take permission from the present Kiran Kumar Reddy government on prosecution of Dharmana, since the case was related to the previous regime headed by Y S Rajasekhara Reddy between 2004 and 2009.

Dharmana submitted his resignation letter to the Chief Minister on August 14 itself, but the later had sat over the letter for several months before rejecting the same.  His cabinet also turned down the CBI request for his prosecution and sent the file to Governor E S L Narasimhan, who had rejected the cabinet recommendation. But finally, the court gave the verdict in favour of the CBI.

Now, Dharmana has no option but to step down and surrender to the court. The natural consequence would be his arrest.
