Dookudu and Magadheera: Both claims are true!

Ever since Mahesh Babu-starrer Dookudu has hit the screen and rocked the box office, people have started comparing it with Magadheera, the block buster film of Ram Charan Teja.

This comparison has turned into controversy after Dookudu producers announced their film as the biggest grosser ever.

As a reply to this statement, just a day before 50 days function of Dookudu in Vijayawada, Chiranjeevi fans placed a huge flexi claiming Magadheera is the biggest hit.

This irked Mahesh fans and they started throwing challenges in newspapers and electronic media.

Adding fuel to the fire, Allu Sireesh who had announced Magadheera All India share as Rs 58crore in his own blog, had edited the amount and started throwing challenges to Mahesh Babu’s fans. It went to such an extent that even a reputed newspapers has written an article on this, highlighting verbal challenge between Mahesh fans and Allu Sireesh.

The argument of Chranjeevi’s fans is that Dookudu has not crossed Magadheera in any area in Andhra Pradesh, while Mahesh Babu’s fans argue that Dookudu is the biggest grosser worldwide.

So, who is correct? Here is the exclusive report from Greatandhra.com explaining the facts behind this controversy:

Dookudu has not crossed the distributor share of Magadheera in any area of Andhra Pradesh but it crossed Magadheera with more than double margin in overseas.

When it comes to the other states in India, Both films have performed equally well with Magadheera collecting slightly more in Karnataka and Dookudu earned more in Tamil Nadu and other parts of India.

As per Allu Sireesh’s article (written in his own blog and twitter on January 26, 2010), the all-India share of Magadheera is Rs 58 crores. Of course, Sireesh later edited the article and described the figure as only AP’s share. After his argument with Mahesh Babu’s fans, he deleted the Magadheera details totally from his blog and also in other Telugu websites. It collected another Rs 5 crore in Overseas, which put the total collections at Rs 63 crore.

On the other hand, Dookudu has collected a total share of around Rs 60 crore. Area wise break up for Dookudu are:

Area Dookudu’s share for 8 weeks (In Rupees)
Nizam 16.3 cr
Ceded 7.8 cr
Nellore 1.7 cr
Guntur 4.25 cr
Krishna 3.05 cr
West+East 6 cr
Utharandhra 4.45 cr
Karnataka 4.5 cr
Tamilnadu, Orissa &
Rest Of India
1.5 cr
Overseas 9.8 cr
Total 59.15 cr (Aprox)

This brings to a conclusion that the distributor share of Magadheera is more than that of Dookudu.

But the surprising factor here is Dookudu is the biggest grosser of all time. Magadheera is distributed by Geetha Distribution in AP. As it is their own film, distribution charges and theatre rentals for Magadheera are comparatively at least 20 per cent lesser than that for Dookudu as Allu Arvind being a senior producer and has lot of hold on distributors and theaters; whereas, Dookudu producers just freshers from USA and have only two movies up their sleeve. They cannot have any hold on theaters or long term association with seasoned distributors, so they need to go as per distributors’ discretion at rentals and expenses. Because of this flexibility, Magadheera is able to earn better shares in AP. Knowing this Dookudu producers have cleverly announced their film as the biggest grosser.

Some of the fans from both the camps who don’t know the real facts behind this have started the ugly fights in media bringing bad name to the film industry and their respective heroes.

Magadheera and Dookudu are the biggest hits of all time and bringing comparison between two films is not healthy. Magadheera has set the new standards and it is the pride of Telugu cinema in terms of technical standards, while Dookudu has showed the true potential & stardom of Telugu cinema in the national and international markets.
