The arrival of June has revived public fears over a fresh bout of trouble in Telangana region.
The pro-Telangana parties and groups, irrespective of their political affiliations, have been warning that they would intensify the movement in June.
Whether it is the threat of mass resignations by Congress MPs and MLAs or street protests by Telangana Rashtra Samithi, a sense of anxiety has gripped the people of the state as to what is in store for them during this month.
Normally, June heralds arrival of monsoon, kindling hopes of farmers. But, for the people of AP it may well signify a severe storm in the form of Telangana agitation. Dilly-dallying over the sensitive issue for long, the Congress has now reached a moment of reckoning. It can no more afford to continue the ambiguity.
Finally, the ruling party is expected to firm up its long-awaited stand on Telangana at its forthcoming “Chintan Shibir” at Mount Abu in Rajasthan during the second week of this month.
The high command has come to the conclusion that it can no more remain silent on the issue in the wake of threats from various sections to intensify the movement, according to a lead story in “Andhra Bhoomi”.
The Congress had earlier assured that it would apply its mind on Telangana after the completion of Assembly elections in five states.
The party is convinced that its silence on the issue since the December 9, 2009 statement in favour of a Telangana state and subsequent retraction, is causing harm in both Telangana and Seemandhra regions. During his recent visit to Hyderabad, the AICC General Secretary in-charge of AP Ghulam Nabi Azad was told by the state leaders in no uncertain terms that a decision has to be taken without any further delay.
The TRS has threatened to intensify the agitation during this month if the Centre failed to announce a favourable decision on granting statehood for the region. Even the elected representatives of Congress, including MPs and MLAs, have announced that they would quit their posts for the sake of statehood cause.
Given the wider ramifications any decision on Telangana would have, the party is said to be of the view that it would be better to discuss it on a bigger platform. The Chintan Shibir will be attended by all Congress chief ministers, presidents of all PCCs, apart from top leaders including members of the CWC. Thus, it would enable the leadership elicit opinion of leaders from different states considering that demands for smaller states exist in many places.
According to the report, the party may adopt a middle on the highly contentious issue to satisfy the sentiments in all the three regions. With YSR Congress Party President Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy waiting in the wings to exploit the political vacuum, the Congress leadership is acutely aware of the consequences of its decision on Telangana.
Meanwhile, the state will soon have a new PCC Chief and an announcement regarding the revamp of the state unit will be made shortly, “Eenadu” and “Andhra Jyothy” quoted former Chief Minister K Rosaiah as saying.
