Editorial: It's Not Cake For Jagan To Become CM

The shock factor currently making rounds in the political circles is the tsunami created by the ‘Fan’ of YSR Congress party.

The man behind that is Y S Jaganmohan Reddy and while his thumping victory at Kadapa by-polls was any indication, there were also estimations that he might well be the man who could oust the ruling congress government and sit on the chair which was once adorned by his late father.

However, while that seems to be Jagan’s ultimate goal as well, here is a hard fact that he should acknowledge.

Recently, an opinion poll was conducted on what are the chances of Jagan becoming the Chief Minister. Interestingly, there are 52% who said no while 33% who said yes. The remaining said it is too early to comment on anything. Anyhow, going by the majority it is looking obvious that many feel it is not going to be a cake walk for Jagan to become a CM.

There are various reasons to it but let us look at few significant ones. As such, the Jagan mania is definitely strong in the Kadapa and Rayalaseema area but then it may not be so throughout the entire state.

On the other hand, there is the teething problem of the Telangana issue and already the ruling congress is beginning to move its cards faster so as to establish their credentials in the T-region.

The other factor is that, there are still very powerful leaders in the Congress and Telugu Desam parties who hold strong fortes in their regions so getting past them is not going to be easy for Jagan. Though he has a political legacy, Jagan is currently holding support due to the sympathy factor so it would take extraordinary skills of a leader and strategist to win the confidence of the people.

Another point to note is the fluidic situation of his coterie. Till date, it is not really sure how many MLAs are actually keen on being part of YSR Congress and it is also not sure as to what target strategy Jagan has set if he is keen on bringing down the Congress government.

Rationally speaking, waiting till 2014 election will definitely not work in Jagan’s favor so time is another challenge for him. Since he has picked up a tussle directly with Sonia Gandhi, the chances are that he and his system would be facing frequent problems from the government.

So, the future of Y S Jagan lies more or less in his own hands. He has to take care in building up the loyal coterie and sustain the craze on him among the people.
