Interview: Comedian 'Vennela Kishore'

He is yet to conquer Tollywood as comedian. But he conquered many hearts those watched his performance right from 'Vennela'. Hence he is called 'Vennela Kishore'. He is awarded with Nandi in the Best Comedian category for acting in 'Inkosaari'.  Kishore shares his feelings in an exclusive interview to greatandhra.com.

How is your feeling after winning Nandi?
Its euphoric moment ever felt in my life. To be honest from childhood I have never won any award..be it sports, studies or in any fun games at mall..I was a loser, a purely silent back bench guy who used to scratch his dreams or crushes on the benches and walls..haha..I only remember one thing from then that I was a big fan of cinema and huge fan of Amitabh and Megastar which was often misused by my parents to lure me for anything i hate to do..example: early morning tuitions...I was more of a 14/25 marks guy who is never understood. So more than a Nandi award it is a first award ever to me..I was on cloud nine where my family were running around calling people..Priceless Moment which is purely dedicated to Suman Pathuri and Kalyan Palla. Cant thank them enough..

Many say that Nandi awards were given after lobbying. What do you say?
I can't say anything about that but it is quite bitter to hear in between all the congratulatory calls I hav been getting. Every sweet news is followed by a bitter one I guess..The day I got the news of winning nandi award I called one of my best friends to share the news..the first word he said before congratulating me was "Did the producer give money for your award?" It was shattering for me..ofcourse later he sugar coated it by those regular greetings but it deeply irked me. All I can say is in all my 6 films after vennela the best reviews ever I got for my performance is for 'Inkosari'. Any one can just google the 'Inkosari' reviews where atleast one paragraph was allotted for my character which was an overjoyed moment..There were many instances when I cursed my fate that wish 'Inkosari' did well, I could have got a good break but thanks to Veeru Potla Sir who gave me 'muddu krishna' character in Bindaas which has extended my project in tollywood for more 2 years :)

What is your education background?
I did my Masters in Information Systems  at Ferris State University,Big Rapids-Michigan. Later I moved into Quality Assurance field which was a smooth ride before I took the tollywood roller coaster..

What made you step into film acting?
Two words. DEVA KATTA. I was more of a direction department guy. Was always dreaming of writing n directing films. I actually joined Deva Katta as an assistant director for Vennela and was auditioning people for 'Kadar' character. Guess Deva was noticing my body language(naughty deva) while explaining actors the character of Kadar which was actually matching my character ..haha..Later on he insisted that Kadar character should be played by me. He had immense confidence on that character on paper itself where I had nil expectations. I was always dreaming of direction which I guess helped the character to be careless which really went well into the viewers. Later on thanks to vennela I got many offers but I was a gareebon ka baap in USA..pending credit card bills, pending car loan bills and other issues made me think more commercially and I started doing my job sincerely. But thanks to my wife, my parents and in-laws I got the courage to give a second try in tollywood. Thats it..I am here..

Any acting experience in childhood?
Whatever acting I did was in front of my parents to skip my tuitions and stealing money for buying bubble gums to collect cricket stars pictures..Never had any experience apart from that..

Who is your role model in acting?
Bigger B I call him. Brahmanandam Sir. I hav literally lived on his comedy. My family and friends, everyone knows that all I need in life is a good food, video games and Bigger B's Comedy Scenes. Thats all. I just look at him in awe..My family literally moves away from me when Bigger B arrives on screen cause of my screaming and whistling. My whole vocal nerves just blindly respond to his entry in any movie. I salute him. Comedy in Tollywood is the best in all Indian languages where a huge share of the credit goes to him.

Dreams to be fulfilled in film industry?
To be honest my dreams are more than fulfilled. But I would love to see myself as one of the top 10 comedians in tollywood. Like we get those TV shows where they show all the comedy scenes right, I would love to see my picture over there..Hope I will get there cause till now tollywood has been treating me really well..

Talent or PR..What do you think most crucial for success in films?
With my short experience till now I have noticed that PR plays a major role apart from talent. An Average performance in a Big budget movie weighs lot more than an award winning performance in a small budget movie. Like wise you should be known to industry that you do exist. I still get producers who have never seen vennela, inkosari or prasthanam but they have seen me in 'Bindaas' pictures on websites. Many still think that 'Bindaas' is my debut movie. PR is a must n should thing to get into the big league where of course talent will make you cruise but PR will get you an opportunity. I am the perfect example for a poor PR guy.

What are your upcoming films?
Orange starring ram charan teja, genelia
Emaindi Ee Vela starring varun sandesh, nisha agarwal
VareVa starring gowtam,shambhavi
Thimmraaju starring Ali
Aha na Pellanta starring Allari Naresh

What can you say to the aspiring artistes those are willing to jump into films?
Needs lots of Patience. All aspiring artists should give atleast 3-4 years full time to gain a big opportunity in films. They shouldnt try part time which doesnt help in any way. YOUTUBE plays a major role in providing opportunities. Its more easy if they make a short film presenting their acting skills with limited budget and upload it on youtube. Based on the comments they can guage their capacity (thanks to the genuine critics who point out their strengths and weaknesses) and over that they can modify their skills accordingly. Later he can just take that video to movie offices and take it from there. 99% of the aspiring artists I know, are blindly targeting hero roles which kills their major share of opportunity. It would be great if they take any opportunity as a gate pass to a huge theme park of tollywood. Once you get it you can then choose your ride. Wish we had more aspiring villains..

Thanks to greatandhra (My oldest bookmarked website) for the interview..
