MMS responsible for denial of SCS to AP?

The Congress party has been shouting from roof tops demanding special category status to Andhra Pradesh, but the fact of the matter is that it was the committee comprising former Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh which had recommended that no state should be given special category status.

This was revealed by Bharatiya Janata Party MLC Somu Veerraju in Kadapa on Tuesday. According to Veerraju, the Parliamentary standing committee on finance of which Manmohan Singh was a member had studied the devolution of funds to the state and observed that there was no use of giving any special category status to the states.

“That is precisely why the 14th finance commission has recommended that there was no need for special category status to any state. It was Manmohan Singh who is responsible for denial of special status to AP,” Veerraju said.

He said AP would get much larger benefit from the special financial package than what it could have got from the special category status.

“In fact, the fight should have been against division of the state. The Congress party did a great injustice to AP by dividing the state, only with a view to making Rahul Gandhi as Prime Minister,” the BJP leader said.
