Is 'Amnesty International' Justified In Its Comments?

Following the inhuman attack on the school in Pakistan in which 148 children were killed, Pakistan has lifted a ban on the death penalty and as an immediate offshoot, four people were hanged.

On Monday, Pakistan has announced that it intends to execute more than 500 militants who have been awarded the death penalty by ‘Courts’.

However, leading human rights group, ‘Amnesty International’ has expressed grave concerns over this decision of Pakistan.

"Pakistan suffered a horrific tragedy in Peshawar last week, but resorting to the death penalty and threatening to carry out large numbers of executions masks rather than addresses the underlying problems that need to be tackled by the government. The communities living in the north-west of Pakistan are gravely at risk from violence and human rights abuses," said David Griffiths, Deputy Director of Amnesty International for Asia-Pacific Region.

He further added, “The speed with which these executions are taking place raises big questions about how meaningful the review of the mercy petitions, the last safeguards in death penalty cases, has been in a country where trials are systemically flawed. Not only would executing death row prisoners do nothing to protect civilians caught up in this conflict, it could ratchet up the already very high level of violence in Pakistan".

The Rights group added that it opposes the death penalty in all cases without exception, regardless of the nature or circumstances of the crime, guilt, innocence or other characteristics of the individual or the method used by the state to carry out the execution.

What is the solution, Mr. Griffiths?

At best, it can be safely surmised that Mr. Griffiths was only echoing the ideology of his organization.

Is it inhuman to execute people who have convincingly proved themselves to be unsuited to live among humans? By granting them lengthy sentences, we only allow them to live and propagate their hatred further at the expense of the tax payer’s money.

What kind of sentence would be termed ‘just’ according to you Mr. Griffiths, for people who do not hesitate to shoot four year- old children between the eyes? These terrorists have to be put down once and for all. They are a cancer to society and one fights cancer or else he succumbs to it!

The only valid point in the argument of Griffiths is that death sentences are being given where trials are systematically flawed! That is a genuine concern that can be addressed, to make sure that the prisoner rightfully merits a death sentence! But other than that, no mercy need be extended to the agents of terror.

The ‘Peshawar School incident’ proves that! There are some people, who although born as humans, do not deserve to live among them!
