While the “Anna NTR canteens” started by the Telugu Desam Party government a couple of years ago in select parts of the state on the lines of Amma Canteens of Tamil Nadu are yet to attract the people in a big way, YSR Congress party MLA from Mangalagiri in Guntur district Alla Ramakrishna Reddy on Sunday launched “Rajanna Canteens” in his constituency, that became instant hit.
Reddy, who closely studied the Rs 5 a meal scheme being implemented by Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation in Hyderabad some time ago, decided to implement the scheme in his constituency from May 14, coinciding with the day on which late Y S Rajasekhar Reddy took over as the chief minister of Andhra Pradesh in 2004.
While the GHMC meals scheme is available for Rs 5, Alla Ramakrishna Reddy’s meals was made available for only Rs 4.
While GHMC meals has only rice, pickle, dal and curd, the Rajanna canteen has rice, curry, dal and egg for four days a week, banana for rest of the three days. Besides, chips will be served in 3 centres for 10 days each.
The canteen was be inaugurated by the MLA at Ambedkar statute in the Gautama Buddha Road here. If it becomes a bit hit, it will definitely fetch a lot of mileage for Reddy in the next elections!
