Telangana's Dirty Dam Politics!

Telangana's Dirty Dam Politics!

The Nagarjuna Sagar dam has 26 gates and two canals: one on the left side and one on the right side. AP is rightfully demanding control over 13 gates and tense moments were witnessed at the reservoir when AP officials went to talk to the dam authorities.

The Telangana government has deployed armed reserve police force at the dam. Also, the superintending engineer of the dam is Vijaya Bhaskar, a Telanganite who is expectedly behaving in a partisan manner.

The right canal supplies water to fields in Krishna, Guntur and Prakasam districts of AP. The left canal serves the farmers of Nalgonda and Khammam districts of Telangana.

The Centre had formed the Krishna River Management Board to settle rows over sharing of water from Nagarjunasagar and Srisailam projects. But the geographical location of the dams has been leading to frequent trouble.

Telangana is not releasing the water into the right canal. Therefore AP has no option but to take over control of half the reservoir.

“10,000 cusec of water has to be released daily into the right canal. But the Telangana government is only releasing around 5000-6000 cusec daily for the last one month. Farmers in our districts are being badly affected,” said Devineni Uma, AP Irrigation Minister.
