Should Virat Kohli have a say in coach selection?

The contract of Duncan Fletcher as the coach of the Indian cricket team will expire, after the World Cup starting next month.

Former Australian cricketer, Dean Jones feels that since it is only a matter of time before Virat Kohli takes over as captain for the T-20 and one -day side too, he should have a say in the selection of the coach.

“It is important for the captain to be comfortable with the coach so that they can work together for the success of the team,” said Dean Jones.

Actually, the suggestion of Dean Jones might make sense for a homogeneous outfit like the Australian team. In the case of India, it is different.

The rich diversity of the Indian cricket team in terms of demographics and other factors is unparalleled in any other ‘sports team’ in the world.

As such, the captain of the team should be a player who can work despite the differences, a fusing force in a circuit of opposite currents.

By allowing him a say in coach selection, his obligations move away from the playing ground and encroach on the administrative aspect of things, a dirty affair at times and something better off in the hands of other men.

The captain is like a soldier on duty. It his duty to fight, irrespective of  the fact who his commanding officer is.

Should the captain be allowed to choose his commanding officer for success in the mission?
