No Special Status To AP And Telangana

Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana are the States which have applied for 'special status'.

As regards AP and Telangana, the proposals are pending in the ‘Prime Minister’s Office’ (PMO) and once the PM gives his approval, they will be referred to an ‘Inter-Ministerial Group’ (IG).

However, according to sources in the Ministry of ‘Planning’, it is highly unlikely that either AP or Telangana will get the special status.

The eligibility criteria for special status says: “Hilly and difficult terrain, low population density or sizeable share of tribal population, strategic location along borders with neighboring countries, economic and infrastructural backwardness and nonviable nature of state finances.”

Going by these criteria, Telangana and AP stand a remote chance of getting the SCS.

However, tax benefits might be given to both states for ten years to promote industrialization and economic growth.

“Instead of AP Chief Minister, Chandrababu Naidu overemphasizing on building a grand new capital and Telangana CM focusing on skyscrapers, they must now shift their focus on infrastructure development which would attract investors,” said MV Rajeswar Rao, former secretary general of FAPCCI (Federation of Andhra Pradesh Chambers of Commerce and Industry).
