Naidu Team In A Hurry For Publicity!

Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has so much penchant for publicity that he tries to garner publicity for the schemes which are still proposal stage.

A couple of days ago, media houses in AP got an official press release from the Chief Minister’s Office stating that Switzerland-headquartered Stadler has come forward to set up a locomotive and rail coach manufacturing unit in Visakhapatnam district, though it had no other details including the scale of investment.

The press release said representatives of Stadler met Naidu at Zurich and expressed their plans to start their operations in India.

“The company has a presence in Kancharapara in West Bengal and they are looking at Visakhapatnam to locate another unit especially to manufacture parts with aluminium. Apart from the investment, the project will create 3,000 jobs,” the press release said.

Simultaneously, a press release in Telugu was also sent to the media houses, which stated that Stadler already had a manufacturing unit in Kancharapara, West Bengal and that the proposed Visakhapatnam unit would be its second in India.

“The Chief Minister, during his talks with Stadler executives in Zurich, invited them to set up their spare parts’ manufacturing unit in AP and they consented to it,” the release claimed.

Inquiries revealed that Stadler, which is an established company in manufacture of rail coaches and locomotives, doesn’t have any unit in India as claimed by the CMO.

Even the company’s website does not contain any mention of its Indian operations so far. It is one of the major global players that evinced interest in the manufacture of EMU/MEMU coaches at the proposed Kancharapara facility in West Bengal under the ambitious Rs 20,000 crore joint venture project of the Railways.

Railways is expected to award the contract only in May and Stadler is not the only player in contention.
