Minister's Offer: A 'better coach' For Sindhu

Politicians are known for their foot-in-the-mouth syndrome. They lose their tongue on sensitive matters and then fail to cover up their goof-up.

It happened in the case of Telangana deputy chief minister Mahmood Ali on Monday. He has nothing to do with sports, yet he tried to play smart while felicitating Olympics silver medallist P V Sindhu by saying that he would find a better coach for her so that she would get gold medal next time.

He told a national news agency at the G M C Balayogi stadium that the Telangana government is planning to provide a better coach to Sindhu.

“The present coach (Pullela Gopichand) is good. But we wish she would get gold medal in her future international events,” he said.

Probably, Mahmood Ali wanted to say that Sindhu needed more intense coaching to get the gold medal. But what he conveyed to the news agency that the government would change her coach. It was naturally played up in national media creating embarrassing situation for the Telangana government.

By the way, the government has no role in selecting the coach. It is the player who picks up his or her coach.
