Lokesh To Become MLC: Backdoor Or Front Door?

Lokesh To Become MLC: Backdoor Or Front Door?

Now that it is more or less certain that Telugu Desam Party general secretary Nara Lokesh will get into the cabinet of his father, chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, there is no option for him but to become an MLC.

Earlier, Lokesh said he would not prefer getting into the cabinet through backdoor methods (by becoming an MLC) but through right royal method of by getting elected as an MLA. After Naidu announced that he would induct his son into the cabinet, he has to choose the MLC route.

But even in this route, there are two entries – again backdoor and front door. If he has to choose the front door method, he has to get elected as an MLC under local bodies’ quota or graduates’ quota. And if he chooses backdoor method, he has to be either nominated under the Governor’s quota or elected under the MLAs’ quota. The backdoor method is always an easy option.

Sources said Naidu is learnt to be preferring fielding Lokesh as an MLC candidate under the local bodies’ quota from East Godavari district. Though Lokesh wanted to choose the easy option of getting elected under MLAs’ quota, Naidu reportedly felt that fighting direct elections under local bodies’ quota would give him some wider exposure to the people. It would also help him strengthen the party base in East Godavari.

However, it is doubtful whether Lokesh would prefer the direct election route, because he feels it is an insult for him to depend on the local bodies. He may ultimately prefer nomination under MLAs’ quota.
