IT Employees Can Now Form Trade Unions

Chennai: The employees of Information Technology biggies in Tamil Nadu can now form trade unions to get their woes redressed, media reports say.

While forming trade unions were always a right of employees of software companies, IT biggies had managed to keep its thousands of employees away from forming unions.

This will now change as the Tamil Nadu government recently said that employees of software companies also have the right to form trade unions. The government was replying to a petition by a labour union.

According to a report in The Times of India, the petition was filed by Kumar Jayant, state labour secretary of Puthiya Jananayaga Thozhilalar Munnani.

In its reply, the government said, the report quotes, "IT company employees also are free to form trade unions and redress their grievances through evoking the provisions of the Industrial Disputes Act 1947. Any trade union with IT employees as its members can rise industrial disputes under section 2 (k) of the act and seek remedy."
