Is It Beauty That Counts?

“If Lakshmi Parvathi had been good looking, then she would have definitely become the CM after NTR’s death,” said actor Rajasekhar and his wife Jeevitha on a talk show, once. Is it true?

When it comes to women politicians, do looks count more than capability or ideology?

Against this backdrop, a couple of tweets by Markandey Katju have kicked up a storm! Katju is a man despised by many for his forthright nature and for the same reason equally loved by others.

He is a former Supreme Court Judge and former Chairman of ‘Press Council of India’. What were Katju’s tweets about? They were in relation to the upcoming Delhi polls and BJP Chief Ministerial candidate Kiran Bedi. Both Kiran Bedi and a former journalist, Shazia Ilmi have recently joined the BJP.

“I regard Shazia Ilmi much more beautiful than Kiran Bedi. If Shazia had been made their C.M. candidate BJP wud have definitely won the Delhi elections. People vote for beautiful faces, as in Croatia. Even a person like me who does not vote wud have voted for Shazia,” tweeted Katju.

Apart from the fact that a distinguished person like Katju made such remarks, on the flip side, is what he said correct? Not whether the BJP ought to have made Shazia Ilmi the CM candidate, but his contention that people vote for beautiful faces! If that is the case then how can one explain the success of the likes of Mayawati and Mamata Banerjee?

With all due respect, surely the looks of Maya or Mamata , is not going to give anyone sleepless nights?
