Dy CM unhappy with Naidu's capital choice

Andhra Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister KE Krishna Murthy has strongly opposed the choice of Vijayawada-Guntur as the prospective capital of Andhra Pradesh, as recommended by Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu.

On Tuesday, Krishna Murthy said Vijayawada could only be a temporary capital but not a permanent one as it is too congested. There is no adequate government land for the capital expansion.

“Vijayawada has been selected as the temporary capital due to its connectivity with other places. But it cannot be a permanent capital,” he said.

The deputy Chief Minister said that the new capital of Andhra Pradesh should be convenient for the citizens of all 13 districts in the State.

The decision on new capital would be taken in a transparent manner after going through all the aspects. He also denied lobbying for Kurnool as the new capital. However, he said that the committees set up for the new capital would explore all the options.

The Deputy CM also informed that government properties within 10 kilometre radius of all district headquarters have been identified for the new capital.

As part of this exercise, 177 acres have been identified in Srikakulam, 581 acres in Vizianagaram, 1473 acres in Visakhapatnam, 204 acres in East Godavari, 79 acres in West Godavari, 3247 in Krishna, 2012 in Guntur, 559 in Prakasam, 5823 in Nellore, 2050 in Chittoor, 4270 in Anantapur, 689 in Kadapa and 4972 acres in Kurnool. Therefore, 32,872 acres of government land have been identified.
