Drunk AP ex-MLA Fires In Club, Scoots

Gudivada: In what could be a scene straight out of a Telugu action flick, senior TDP leader Raavi Venkateswara Rao on Thursday whipped out his revolver, fired in the air and ran away from the club where he was 'relaxing'.

Police, who rushed to the spot, asked Venkateswara Rao, a former Gudivada MLA, to surrender along with his weapon.

Scared out of their wits after hearing the gunshots, people at The Gudivada Club ran helter-skelter. Rao, who was inebriated to the gills, fired two rounds with his weapon around 2.30 pm.

Sources said on learning that local MLA Kodali Nani of YSR Congress Party was on the second floor of the club, Rao, who was on the ground floor, ran towards the MLA and his followers with his weapon. Both Rao and Nani were at the club to attend the 10th day ceremony of a theatre owner who died in the town.

"Rao fired from his revolver in full public glare as if he is some film hero," an eyewitness said. Luckily, the bullets didn't hit anyone in the crowd.

Sources said Rao's aides whisked him away swiftly. It is learnt that the licence of the revolver had expired a year ago and Rao did not renew it. Senior police officers recorded statements of the club owner and those present on the spot about the firing.
