Does Telangana Need Airports?

Not many private players are evincing interest in the Telangana government’s plans to develop Greenfield airports in all the districts of the new State.

Owing to scarcity of funds, the government wanted to build them on the public-private partnership mode. But private players are concerned that the traffic generated from any of the airports would be insufficient to make them viable.

Also, there is a restriction on developing airports within 150 kms of the Shamshabad airport. This automatically rules out Nalgonda, Nizamabad and Mahbubnagar. So, the government has decided to accord priority to Warangal, Kothagudem and Adilabad.

A study of the socio-economic conditions prevalent in these districts indicates that airports are the last thing that the people need.

The farmers suicides continue unabated, there is no drinking water and where available, there is the problem of fluorosis.

Without addressing these problems at the grassroot level, speaking of airports etc is nothing but sheer stupidity. Such fanciful schemes are only for the benefit of big contractors and realty people.
