Do We Need Six Universities At This Stage?

Andhra Pradesh government has decided to set up six universities, including aquaculture and energy universities in the State.

Parakala Prabhakar, Advisor (Communications) to AP Government, said the main objective behind the plans to set up the varsities was to ensure that the State has skilled and qualified manpower in those areas.

Citing the example of aquaculture, he said it has potential to generate revenue of Rs. 1 lakh crore per annum in another four to five years. Apart from aquaculture and energy, Water University, Hospitality University, Logistics University and Sports University are being planned.

Investment on education is never a waste! But the question is that six universities would mean a huge chunk of land and AP does not face a lack of educational institutions either.

Instead of fresh land acquisitions for these six universities, why can’t all six proposals be clubbed into a single university? Or better still, why can’t these streams of study be introduced in existing universities such as ‘Andhra University’, Nagarjuna, Sri Venkateswara , Sri krishnadevaraya or JNTU?

Do we really need six universities now, especially when facing a funds deficit?
